“Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future.” — Robert L. Peters, designer and author.

Design should not be overlooked but grasped and utilised to make dreams come true. Design is a platform that can make thoughts become realities. Delve Magazine exists to expand this creative process and to celebrate design students as they explore their creative imagination at this wonderful intersection of technology and the arts.

Delve Magazine is a platform for both the pursuit of dreams and the forward movement of progress. This magazine aims to provide opportunities for students to showcase what they have tirelessly worked towards, give credit where it is due, and open up doors to opportunities and experiences through the world of design. Designers, this platform is for you. It is here to show you what more can be achieved, to show the world what you can create, and to help you do so. I hope this magazine brings new inspiration and direction to the future you are creating. Use it to build community with your peers; let it widen your eyes to the opportunities waiting to be seized and make it a step on your own unique pathway.

The world is your canvas, so what are you going to create? It is time for you to show what you have learnt, imagined, and strived for. Delve isn’t just a magazine; it is an exploration of the creative processes and unique perspectives of the individuals we showcase. Whether you are an aspiring designer, an artist, or someone just beginning to delve into the endless world of design, this magazine has something for you.

Welcome to the first edition of Delve Design Magazine.

Delve is a new publication to provide a platform for design and creative industry students to showcase their work and celebrate their achievements. Community creatives and industry partners will also be involved, sharing their knowledge and insights.

As an emerging designer, being involved in the pilot of Delve was an opportunity I did not
want to miss. Humble, on-campus beginnings aside, the scope of this magazine is ambitious.
I hope Delve continues to thrive and offer future students from varying disciplines the same opportunities it gave to its original creators. UniSC design students, and others, will gain valuable exposure and potential employment opportunities through their contributions, either as creators or by showcasing their work. And it’s not just about what happens on campus. Local community creatives and industry partners are important features, without them, how else could we foster a greater sense of community spirit and connection within the art and design community?

Moving forward, Delve will publish two hard copy editions each year, along with digital versions of the magazine and a website. Being a creator of Delve’s first print and online edition is an important achievement for me, knowing I am creating the foundations for what I hope will be a long-standing, significant publication, not only for UniSC design students but the wider Sunshine Coast arts and design community. I am confident our team’s hard work, to create a magazine and website of a professional standard, will pave the way for subsequent editions.

As Delve Magazine’s lead designer, I have approached this diverse project with enthusiasm and commitment. The challenges were overcome, and the achievements were celebrated. I hope you enjoy this first edition of Delve Magazine. This is just the beginning.

As an aspiring writer, I have beat my hands against the brick wall that guards industry-level success for 6 years. Most of us here at UniSC will face similar challenges as we attempt to turn our budding student creativity into something that pays our bills. If the big wide world of design is anything like the world of publishing, even the most well-trodden paths from student to professional can seem like endless switchbacks leading up the side of a mountain.

For me, Delve Magazine was a part of the road where things got steeper. But it was also a chance to level things out, to do something that would make the journey that little bit smoother for those who
came after. My first publication was in a boutique California-based nature anthology. Small audience, no payment, of course. It meant nothing, and it meant everything. I was no longer just trying... I was a writer.

Delve Magazine is here to help you make that leap. It is here to connect you with your community, to inspire you, to show you what’s possible and ask you to build it. It is here to show every design student or aspiring creator who flips through these pages that you, too, are not just trying. You are a designer.

The publication of one more magazine will not straighten every bend in the proverbial path. But it will make a difference. The pilot of Delve Magazine is the beginning of something I hope will become a cornerstone of the UniSC design community, a tool each student can use to propel themselves a few steps higher up that mountain.

Welcome to Delve. Please use it to its full potential.
