Goals, Plans and Developers

Tiana Toussaint is a UniSC student studying a Bachelor of Creative industries with a major in screen media. She is passionate about concept art for video games, with a keen favour in the horror-based genre. Her art reflects her creative voice in various design examples as seen within the article.

Currently, Tiana mainly creates art pieces for her own personal use; she has been learning ever since she was a child and has learnt various skills and knowledge since beginning her degree. She states that the biggest knowledge and experience she has gained and enjoyed is being taught how to use various programs within her degree and achieving the skills to use these programs to further her skills and positively impact her artwork—advancing, and even perfecting it.

Concept art is a modernistic style of art that has a vast range of different designs and concepts—as Tiana has experienced, they can look greatly different to one another—and focuses highly on the messages that the artist is trying to convey. This type of art is very popularly in video games, and most audiences will likely know or be able to recall an example of concept art of their favorite game title. Through her studies, Tiana has discovered all the different platforms and genres and has developed her own favorite kinds.

Her current plan, one she's working hard to achieve after graduation, is to work for a video game developer. Specifically, she intends to work for Super Massive Games, a highly popular British video game development company, well known for many popular titles such as Little Nightmares and The Quarry, as well as various other nonhorror releases.

However, Tiana also expresses an eager interest in working freelance jobs remotely—gaining experience that will further her abilities, improving her the knowledge and ‘opening the door’ to opportunities—including working for a large video game development company. Tiana’s goals and work are an inspiration for other students. She sets an example of aiming for what you want to achieve the most and accepting the hard work, dedication and time it requires. Not every goal will be achievable right away, sometimes other steps need to be taken first, but these steps are what will lead you to achieve your main goals.

Drawing on her own experience as a student, she encourages others not to be afraid to seize all opportunities that present themselves, as they may lead to more than you think. ‘Do everything you can,’ she says. The more experience, knowledge, and opportunities you accept, the more doors will open, and it will only further your knowledge and skills for your future. Seizing every opportunity available as Tiana is doing will only help students achieve their goals.

Like Tiana, let all of us students at UniSC not forget to dream big and never give up on those dreams—you never know where your skills and knowledge will lead you.
